How to use MAGNOLIAMELO  databases!!!

What is a database?

A database is a collection of computer records  organized to give quick access to information.   With a variety of different features, a database allows for flexible search capability and has become a popular research tool because literally hundreds of thousands of documents can be searched at once.  The types of databases and examples found on MELO are as follows:  

Catalog   
Bibliographic source about materials (books, videos, computer software, periodicals, etc.) found in a library's collection.  Information includes the title, author, copyright date, call number, and location of each item.   Examples:  Holmes Community College Library's  WebCAT and  USM's catalog, ANNA.

Citation Index   
Index that gives just the information needed to find the full article or chapter.  Example:  Gale's Literary Index

Full-Text   
The complete text of articles and documents.  Example:  Ebsco's Academic Search Premier.

Numerical   
Data type information such as statistics or financial data about companies.  Examples:  FEDSTATS

How do I use the Magnolia databases?

The Mississippi Legislature appropriated funds for the purchase of databases on behalf of publicly funded libraries across the state since 1997.  This group of databases is called MAGNOLIA (Mississippi Alliance for Gaining New Opportunities through Library Information Access) and include the following resources.  Please notice the tips and tutorial links for help in using these sources.  

Academic Search Premier
Academic collection of full text, peer-reviewed journals. Nearly 4,700 journals are available in full text, and more than 3,600 of these are peer-reviewed. Provides full text coverage for a broad array of subject areas, including biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, psychology, and religion & theology.]
