Coaching Philosophy: I believe in
providing an environment and opportunities that will make tennis players
the best they can be. I am passionate about coaching tennis and I try to
spread that enthusiasm to my team as an inspiration to achieve
greatness. There is no shortcut to excellence so we practice hard,
maintain a high level of fitness and have a great deal of fun on the
journey.
Coaching History:
-Coach Smith is entering her
9th year as
Co-Lin Women’s Tennis Coach.
-Her teams have competed in
six National Tournaments compiling a dual match record of 107-15.
-In the past sevenx years, the
Lady Wolves have been the No. 1 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year in 1999,
2003 and 2004; No. 2 in the Nation in 2000 and 2002.
-Before joining the Co-Lin staff, she coached at
Wingfield High School in Jackson winning 2 Team City Championships and 2
consecutive 4A Boys Singles State Championships (Trey Usry) in three
years as coach.
-127-22 is Coach Smith’s lifetime record.
-Coached two undefeated seasons, 2 State/Region
Team titles, 6 consecutive Nationally ranked teams/National Tournament
appearances.
-Won 2 Mississippi Association of Coaches “Coach of
the Year” honors.
-Serves as the President of the NJCAA Coaches
Association.
Other Facts:
-Brenda is married to Steve Smith and they are the
proud parents of Matt (age 12) and Josh (age 10).
-Coach Smith is a Certified Teaching Professional
with the United States Professional Tennis Registry (USPTR).
-Other memberships include the United States Tennis
Association (USTA), Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA),
Mississippi Association of Coaches (MAC) and the National Junior College
Athletic Association of Coaches (NJCAA).
-Coach Smith is a 4.5 N.T.R.P. ranked player.
-As a high school senior, she won 2nd in
the Kansas State Tournament in the 1A-3A division in girls singles in
1981, won the Kansas Junior College #1 singles and doubles titles in
1982 and participated in the NJCAA National Tournament in Ocala, Florida
that year.
-Coach Smith was a High School Athletic and
Academic All-American and a 1st Team Junior College
All-American in basketball for Cloud County Community College in
Kansas. Her team won the State/Regional Championship in 1983 and
participated in the NJCAA National Tournament in Senatobia, Mississippi
that year.
-While at Mississippi College, she played
basketball, tennis and softball. In basketball, she finished 7th
in the Nation in assists in NCAA Division I. She won the Gulf South
Conference #1 singles title and was a pitcher for MC’s first fast-pitch
softball team (both NCAA Division II).
-Coach Smith received her Associate of Arts Degree
from Cloud County Community College (Concordia, Kansas), her Bachelor of
Science Degree and Master’s Degree from Mississippi College in Clinton,
Mississippi as a Biology major.
-Coach Smith is an instructor
and division chairperson for the health and physical education
department and is a USTPR certified teaching tennis professional.
