CLINTON The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves
captured the 2008 Mississippi Association of Community and
Junior Colleges (MACJC) State Championship by defeating the No.
7 ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs 1-0 in a title
game delayed two days by rain.
Sophomore pitcher Becca Bailey of Baton Rouge threw a 3-hit
shutout against the defending State and Regional Champion Lady
Bulldogs. Bailey struck out 9 batters and issued no walks to
pick up her 15th win of the season. During the tournament,
Bailey was a perfect 3-0, allowing no runs. She recorded a total
of 36 strikeouts and 2 walks in 20 innings pitched.
Before rain delayed
play, center fielder Emily Langley led off the first inning for
the Lady Wolves with a walk. She advanced and scored the only
run of the game after 3 wild pitches.
"It was a classic
pitching matchup," said Co-Lin head coach Allen Kent. "First
Team All-American Danielle Ryan (Gulf Coast) kept us from
scoring any more runs."
The Lady Bulldogs
threatened in the third inning as they got a runner to second
base with 1 out. Bailey recorded a strikeout. Then Gulf Coast
leadoff hitter drilled a line drive shot to center, but Co-Linıs
Emily Langley made a shoestring catch to end the inning.
"Iım so proud of
these girls for believing in themselves," said Kent. "I told
them from day one we had a very special group. We had a chance
to be really good and do something special. They believed in
themselves, stayed healthy and did all the right things."
The Lady Wolves have
won 16 of their last 18 games, their last 9 in a row.
Co-Lin went to the
NJCAA National Tournament in Normal, Ill., in
2006 and finished third. The Lady
Wolves won the state and regional titles that year.
