NORMAL, Ill. - The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves
took the two-time National Champion No. 1 ranked Phoenix College
(AZ) Lady Bears to 9 innings before bowing 2-1 in the third
round of the National Junior/Community College (NJCAA) National
Softball Tournament at Champion Fields.
"We went toe-to-toe with the No. 1 team in the Nation and had
a chance to win it," said Co-Lin Head Coach Allen Kent. "We
can't hang our heads, we just have to do it the hard way
tomorrow." Co-Lin defeated the No. 3 ranked Parkland (IL)
Community College 2-1 in the second round of the tournament. The
Lady Cobras were runners-up in the National Tournament in 2005.
The Lady Wolves (39-8) face the Lady Cobras of Parkland
Community College for a second time at 9 a.m. Saturday in the
losers bracket to see who will face the Lady Bears in the 10:30
a.m. championship game.
Phoenix College 2, Co-Lin 1 (9 innings)
After two scoreless innings, Co-Lin freshman right fielder
Annie Selman smashed a homerun over the left field fence to give
the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead. It was Selman's first homerun of the
season and only the second homerun for the Lady Wolves all
season.
In the fourth inning with 1 out, Lady Bears center fielder
Casey Wheeler singled and moved to second on a single by short
stop Kailey Yarmer. Wheeler and Yarmer attempted a double steal.
The throw to third got away from Co-Lin short stop Kady King
allowing Wheeler to score the tying run.
Both pitchers held each other's team at bay through
regulation and into extra innings. Phoenix would take the lead
in the top of the ninth inning with a leadoff homerun by second
baseman Lindsay Kelso.
Co-Lin threatened in the bottom of the ninth as Megan Bateman
delivered her second hit of the game, but the Lady Wolves could
not get her home.
"We played our hearts out and we out hit them, but we just
didn't quite get it done," said Coach Kent. "You can't expect to
win scoring just one run. We left too many runners (nine) strand
on base. But Phoenix is the kind of team that takes advantage of
every opportunity you give them."
Co-Lin pitcher Emily Horne pitched her third game in two days
as she scattered 6 hits, struck out 3 and walked 2. "Emily threw
another great game," said Coach Kent. "She didn't deserve to
lose."
Leading the Lady Wolves at the plate with two hits apiece
were Selman, Horne and Bateman. Also hitting safely were Jackie
Stowe and Erin Douglass.
Winning pitcher Roxanne Berjarano struck out nine and allowed
8 hits. Kelso led the Lady Bears with 2 hits. Right fielder
Amanda Willmon doubled. Jenny Lewis and Natalie Heely also
singled.
