Diamond Wolves sweep Mercy Hurst


Cameron Logan is safe at home.

          WESSON – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolfpack baseball team swept a doubleheader with the Mercy Hurst (PA) Community College Saints 11-1 in the opener and 12-2 in the finale.

          The Wolfpack exploded for 6 runs in the bottom of the second inning to break a 1-1 tie. Left fielder Paul Davis led off the inning with a single and stole second. Cameron Logan singled advancing Davis to third. An error on Josh Coone’s fly ball to center field scored Davis and Logan. Coone scored on a Mitch Pappas fielder’s choice. Center fielder Montez Chatman hit an RBI single to centerfield. Chatman scored on a Jordan Toney sacrifice fly to center. Third baseman Timmy Foster slugged his first home run of the day over the right field fence to give the Wolfpack a 7-1 lead.

          Co-Lin tacked on another run in the third inning when Coone reached first base on an error and scored on a Chatman single.

          In the bottom of the fifth inning, Coone drew a walk and advanced to third on back-to-back singles by Mason Warren and Jordan Toney. Coone scored on a wild pitch and Warren scored on a Steven Gauthe’ fly ball to end the game by mercy rule at 11-1.

          At the plate, Foster led the Wolves with a home run and a single. Davis added a triple and a single and Chatman hit two singles. Singling were Toney, Bennett Wilson, Logan and Pappas.

          Freshman Trent Hartzog picked up the win for Co-Lin allowing 1 run on 4 hits, walking 4 and striking out 4.

          For Mercy Hurst, first baseman Benji Jarabeck had a double and a single.

          Absorbing the loss was T.J. Tavender. He allowed 9 runs on 9 hits, walked 2 and struck out none in 4 innings.

          In the second game, Patrick Shumaker picked up the win allowing 2 runs on 3 hits, walking 2 and striking out 1 in 3 innings. Freshman Zach Watson relieved Shumaker in the fourth inning.

          The Wolfpack picked up 3 runs in the first inning as Gauthe’ singled and Foster hit a 2-run shot over the left field fence. TaeByus Smith was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a Davis single.

          In the second inning, the Wolfpack picked up 5 runs highlighted by a bases loaded triple by Davis.

          Co-Lin added four more runs in the third inning on RBI doubles by Antoon and Toney.

          Powering the Wolfpack at the plate were Davis with a triple and a single. Antoon ripped 2 doubles and Gauthe’ had 2 singles. Foster hit his second home run of the day. Doubling were Toney, freshman Jared Rogers and Logan. Adding support with a single was Zach Summers.
