Diamond Wolves split with Hinds


Brock Campbell picked up his first win of the season over the Hinds Eagles.

          RAYMOND – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolfpack baseball team split a doubleheader with the Hinds Community College Eagles. The Wolfpack (3-2) won the opener 4-3 in 9 innings but dropped the finale 7-2.

          In the ninth inning, centerfielder Montez Chatman got on base with an infield single and advanced to second on a ground ball by Jordan Toney. Chatman stole third base. With 1 out, Josh Coone hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field to score Chatman.

          Brock Campbell (1-0) took over for starting pitcher Brandt Hinton in the seventh inning to get his first win. Hinton allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, struck out 3 and walked 1. Campbell pitched the final 3 innings allowed 1 walk and struck out 4.

          Powering the Wolves at the plate were Paul Davis and Cameron Logan with 2 doubles each. Montez Chatman singled twice. Timmy Foster tripled. Singling were TaeByus Smith and Jordan Toney.

          Absorbing the loss was Brandon Martin. He allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, struck out 3 and walked 2. Chris Ferriss took over in the sixth inning and 3 2/3 innings with 3 hits allowed and 4 strikeouts.

          For Hinds, Eric Douglas led the way with 3 singles. Doubling were David Mooney and Jonathan Ettinger.

Hinds 7, Co-Lin 2

          In the second game, freshman Joseph Evans absorbed the loss. Evans worked 2.2 innings, allowing 6 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits, struck out 3 batters, walked 2, and hit 3 batters. Also seeing action on the mound were freshman Ian Ferrell (3) and sophomore southpaw Avery Mathes (6).

          Chatman led the Wolfpack at the plate with a double and two singles. Logan doubled. Smith and Mitch Pappas singled.

          Winning pitcher Aryo Fleming allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, struck out 8 and walked 4 in 5 innings. Also seeing action were Daniel Cowart (6) and Dusty Williams (7). Cowart allowed 2 hits and struck out 2. Williams allowed 1 hit and struck out 2.

          Brandon Alford led the Eagles at the plate with 2 singles. Shane Bennett doubled. Singling was Blake Pennock.
