Oral Communication

(Principles of Speech)

COURSE GOAL: The goal of this course is to provide students the opportunity to develop skills and gain experience in making speeches of various types before a group.

Students will demonstrate understanding of communication theory and processes as applied to public speaking and will demonstrate ability to compose and deliver speeches.

RECOMMENDATION:  For your success in this class, we recommend it be taken after successfully completing English Comp I if you do not have a strong background in writing, research, and organizing information.

TEXT:  The Challenge of Effective Speaking, 11th ed.  By Rudolph Verderber

MEETINGS:  MWF classes meet three times per week for 50 minutes.  TTh classes meet twice per week for 75 minutes.

MATERIALS:  Two folders with prongs and pockets--one for handouts, one for research materials--and computer disk.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: The absence policy of Co-Lin will be followed.  Students should note that excessive absences could result in dismissal from class by the Dean of Academic Affairs with a grade of  F.  You are responsible for being familiar with the absence policies of the college in the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Handbook.

DISABILITY STATEMENT:  If a student has a disability that qualifies under the Americans with Disabilities Act and requires accommodations, he/she should contact the Office of Disability Support Services for information on appropriate forms, policies and procedures.  Direct any correspondence to Tina Chisholm or call 643-8401; FAX 643-8240.

TESTS:  There will be three major tests during the course.  These tests will be taken from text material and from class discussions.  The texts will consist of Multiple Choice questions.  Make-up of major tests will be administered in the Learning Center and must be scheduled with the instructor within two class periods of the missed test.  You are responsible for contacting your instructor about a make-up test.

CLASS:  Class attendance is the key to your success!!  Class meetings will consist of discussion of text materials and exercises to help prepare for the speeches.  Daily grades will be given on homework from textbook or workbook, video guide sheets, and on speech assignments designed to guide speech development.  Speech assignments done outside of class must be computer typed.  Handwritten speech assignments will not be accepted.  NO late homework assignments will be accepted for any reason.  Written speech assignments presented when due may be revised for a better grade if turned in by the next class meeting.  Revision on speeches is encouraged and usually results in better speeches.

SPEECHES:  You will give 3 assigned speeches during the course:

Cultural Literacy presentation – 2-4 minutes

Informative Speech – 4-6 minutes

Persuasive Speech – 4-6 minutes

Speeches must be delivered on the day they are assigned.  Your grade on a late speech will be reduced one letter grade per day regardless of the reason.  Be prepared to give a missed speech the day you return to class.  Speeches are to be the original composition of each student.  Students must use researched information to prepare a speech, must cite references appropriately, and must not plagiarize such material (see Co-Lin Student Handbook for policy on plagiarism).  Plagiarized material will receive an automatic F for the assignment.  All speeches must be delivered in order to pass this class.
