Phone Services:

If you wish to have a phone installed in your dorm room, you must contact Bell South.  We are not directly involved in the billing of phone services.  Keep in mind that you do not need a phone line if your intent for the phone is to gain Internet access.  Your room will have a direct connection to the Internet.  Cell phone coverage on campus is very good.  A cellular antenna on the Cellular South Network is co-located on the water tower.

From Above. In Stevens Hall the Network Connection is located above the student desk.

Notice the Jack looks like a Phone Connection, but it is larger. You will need a 6-10 ft Cat5 cable to connect to your Ethernet Adapter.

There is only one port per room. If you wish to install multiple computers you will need to purchase a hub from the bookstore.

Each Dorm has a wiring closet which provides switched 100Mb access to the dorm network.

In Stevens Annex, the network port is colocated with the phone and cable outlet.

OOPS. Burying fiber is tricky. But we did find the TV cable.

Additonal Fiber was need to bring the dorms on line.

Briley Smith punches down in Ellzey.

Sometimes you just have to admire your own work.

Ellzey is an old building and provided a unique challenge. The network connection was terminated adjacent to Phone and Cable.

Summer Help. Justin Russell makes a connection in Ellzey.

Casey Phillips installs an outlet in Ellzey.

For Ellzey Exterior rated Cat5 cable was used to bring access to the rooms.

Copiah is another older facility with a different set of wiring issues.

In Copiah, the drops are run via external panduit.

Mind the box. It sticks out a little bit. Be careful when moving your furniture.

The ports in the dorm rooms are active by default.  Once you plug in your computer you will be assigned an IP address via DHCP.  It is very important that you have updated service packs and antivirus protection on your computer.  Nonpatched and non-protected systems will ultimately become infected with worms and viruses.  We will detect the traffic pattern and will be forced to terminate the connection.  Please check your Co-Lin email account concerning a link to antivirus software and suggestions for patching and updating and scanning your systems.

Network Adapter
Cnet, Linksys, Dlink  the cheaper the better  We can support a wide range of adapters but we do suggest these brands.  They are a good value and can be purchased in the Campus Bookstore for less than $20.00.  We will need to know your
Mac Address.  All adapters have a unique address.

Cat5 cable 6-10'   You will need a cable to run from the jack in the wall to your PC.  You may also purchase this at the Bookstore for less than $10.00

If you want to connect more than one computer in your room, you will need to purchase a hub.  These are available at our Bookstore or Walmart or Compusa, OfficeDepot, etc.

How do I connect multiple computers?  Connect your hub to the wall and then run a Cat5 cable to each of your computers.
You will need 3 (minimum) Cat5 cables to do this.

If you want to set up peer to peer connections with other rooms for game play, personal file sharing, this is okay.  However, if you want to download unlimited quantities of copyrighted materials from the Internet keep in mind this will get you disconnected.  Please see the acceptable usage policy.

The Dorm network is on a VLAN isolated from the main campus network.

The connection to the Internet is provided via a 3Mb ATM link.
