Major. There has been a vast amount of physical labor involved in getting these wolves from an idea to a reality. With out Derek’s assistance we may never have been able to keep our schedule. Once he learned the process of using the massive mold, pouring and firing he began helping and doing a lot of the work by himself. Derek doesn’t remember a time that he didn’t draw. He has been winning awards in art since the first grade. Recently Derek discovered that he also loves sharing his talents and skills with others through teaching children’s art in Brookhaven and adult ceramics in McComb. You could say that the influence for the ’57 Chevy design came from Derek’s parents, Cynthia & Tommy (T-Tommy) Smith. They love antique cars as a hobby and have taken Derek to almost every show. The ’57 Chevy Belair has always been one of his favorites so when he was asked to submit a “different” type of design he knew just what to do. Figuring out just exactly how to put Chevy fins on a wolf proved quite a challenge The fins are sculpted of plaster and attached with bondo (an automotive body filler). Once attached the form was smoothed and painted with a metallic blue enamel and pen-stripped with gold enamel. The finished form was coated with clear glossy polyurethane. |
