Tryout Requirements
  Instrumental Auditions for Band

Potential band members need to audition prior to the beginning of the 2002 Fall School term. It is advised that this be done as soon as possible in order for the student's scholarship to be processed. Although we do not anticipate a shortage in scholarships, there is a possibility this could happen. Therefore, late auditioners could possibly be denied a scholarship. Auditions will consist of a short prepared piece of the person's choice and could be selected from his high school concert or marching band music, major scales selected from Concert Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, G, C, and F, his chromatic scale and a brief sight-reading piece. Percussionists should be able to demonstrate basic rudiments plus sight-reading.

  Drum Major Tryout Information

Candidates for Drum Major should have a routine prepared which indicates their ability to lead an "imaginary band" throughout a football halftime show. Candidates should also demonstrate basic conducting of 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 time at various tempos and in various styles (legato and marcato). Vocal commands and a simple salute should also be demonstrated. Candidates are encouraged to dress in their drum major uniform or some other complimentary attire. A cassette player will be available for routine music.

Head Colette Tryout Information (Head Colette Tryout is ONE day only)

Candidates for Head Colette should perform a routine to music of their choosing that they have choreographed themselves. They will also be asked to demonstrate marching fundamentals and to make up a short impromptu routine to music of our choosing. The tryout will conclude with a personal interview of each candidate by our judging panel.

Flag Corps Audition Information (Candidates may audition on ONE date only)

Candidates for flag corps must present a routine of their choosing, designed to demonstrate their ability on flag, with a strong emphasis on fundamentals.  Marching skills will also be judged.  This routine should be done to music, showing the candidate's rhythmic ability and overall coordination using flag equipment, body movement and marching fundamentals.  This routine should be limited to 1 1/2 minutes.

Colette Audition Information(Candidates may audition on ONE date only)

Colette candidates will be taught a dance routine and marching fundamentals.  Candidates will be expected to wear complimentary short sets or dance wear (no costumes please) and tennis shoes or jazz shoes.  No prepared routine is needed. Candidates will be taught a dance routine. The candidates will be judged by the judging panel during the entire tryout process, including learning the dance and actually performing the dance. A candidate's learning attitude will also be considered. When the candidates register, their height and weight will be measured and recorded. Preference will be given to candidates whose weights and heights are within the range suggested by the "Goal Weights for Women" chart of Weight Watchers International. This chart will be used as a reference for the Colettes throughout the school year.
