Science Quest Competition

Who is eligible to participate in the competition?

All students enrolled in biology, chemistry, or physics courses at the high school level within the Copiah-Lincoln Community College District.

 

What awards will be offered to winners in the competition?

Each student participating in the competition will receive a certificate, recognizing his/her presence at the competition.  That one student scoring the highest on the biology test; that one student scoring the highest on the chemistry test; and that one student scoring the highest on the physics test will receive a plaque and a $900/semester 2 years scholarship to attend Co-Lin.  The three students placing second in the competition (one in biology; one in chemistry; one in physics) will each receive a $900/semester 1 year scholarship to attend Co-Lin and a plaque.  The three students placing third in the biology, chemistry and physics competitions will each receive a plaque and a $450.00 for 1 semester scholarship to attend Co-Lin.  Fourth place winners in each of the three science discipline categories will receive a plaque and a $250.00 for 1 semester scholarship to attend Co-Lin. All scholarships will be awarded for one academic year with the exception of first place.  All scholarships at Co-Lin are stackable up to $500 above the total cost of attending Co-Lin.

 

Those faculty sponsors attending the program will be eligible to receive "door prizes" and other "gifts" that should be of value in developing instructional programs in the sciences.

 

Where and when will the competition be conducted?

The competition will be held on the Wesson Campus of Copiah-Lincoln Community College, Smith Hall 109, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on April 5, 2012

How is the competition organized?

Each participating school will initially select a member of the science faculty to act as an in-school coordinator of the activities related to the competition.  It is through this faculty member that all correspondence will pass from the Co-Lin Science Division to the local teacher(s) whose class(es) will participate in the competition.

The local faculty coordinator and/or other administrative or faculty members will, using criteria of their own choice, select three (3) students from the high school's biology class(es), and/or three (3) from the school's chemistry class(es), and/or three (3) from the school's physics class(es) to represent their school in the competition.  Please note that students attending the activities on Co-Lin's campus must be accompanied by a high school faculty sponsor AND must be currently enrolled in a science class in the area in which they compete.

Students participating in the chemistry and physics test, may use a calculator.

 

What will the day's activities include?

Events of the day will include a one-hour testing competition (one test for biology; one test for chemistry; and one test for physics), a photo session, and teacher discussions.  For student participants and teachers, a free lunch will be provided by Co-Lin's science club, Alpha Omega.

 

Will the events of the Science Quest competition be publicized?

Local schools will be responsible for obtaining publicity of events related to the competition that is conducted at the individual school level.  Publicity of participating schools, students, faculty sponsors, and all events related to the competition held on the Co-Lin campus will be the responsibility of the Science Division of Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

The physical education curriculum is designed for students who plan a career as an instructor of physical education, athletic coach, or director of recreation programs. A student who plans to teach should also refer to the teacher education program at the institution he/she plans to attend. It is strongly recommended that students complete the Praxis I examination prior to transfering (if required).
